Generation#1
William Bradford ( born in Ireland or England c. 1787) and his wife
Alicia Rogers
(born England c. 1798) emigrated from Ireland to Quebec sometime
before May 1820. ( First record found of the family in
Quebec was the burial of their daughter, Alitia
Prudence recorded at the Anglican
Cathedral, Quebec City, at that time).
Records suggest
that William ( Painter/Glazier) and Alicia had a family of at least 12 children though several
died in infancy.
William Bradford died in 1840, aged 53 years - his burial recorded at
the Metropolitan Church, Quebec. Alicia, his wife, was aged 50
years and living at Roxbury, Boston, USA with married daughter,
Henrietta, at 1850 census. Alicia Bradford, widow, born England,
aged 61 years died at Roxbury on 21 November, 1859 of lung fever.
Parents unknown was recorded at death.

Generation#2:1
Andrew Bradford
was probably born in Ireland - as recorded in 1842 census of
Quebec
City. Most records document him as a Painter/Glazier (as was his father, William), however, the
burial
records for his first son named William on 7 January 1839 at
Quebec Garrison list Andrew as a Gunner in the Queen’s Volunteer
Artillery. (The former occupation ties in with family stories
of an ancestor working on Cathedral windows in Quebec.)
He married
Ann Rice, also Irish born, at St Paul's Anglican Church, Quebec City as recorded:

just 2 years old. His burial was
recorded at the Metropolitan Church Quebec City:
Andrew Bradford,

day of July in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty nine.
Quebec records for family of Andrew and Ann show 7 children - 3 died in infancy.

2:1:2 Elizabeth Bradford, at about aged 16 years,
married
Walter Bidgood, Gunner and Driver serving with the English Royal Artillery, at the
Garrison Church, Quebec, on 25 April 1853.
Their first 2 daughters were born in
Quebec but by 1861 Walter and family were in Kent, England at
Bluetown Garrison, Sheerness.
At 1871
census, following his discharge from the army, Walter was Innkeeper at the Horse and
Groom Inn at
Kent Street.
In 1881, 1891 censuses the family was running a
greengrocer/fruiterer shop in High Street, Bluetown.
Elizabeth Bidgood died 3
Nov 1889 at 68
High Street, Bluetown, Sheerness
of Cardiac Disease, Dropsy.
She died Intestate and Letters of Administration of her Personal Estate gave a
gross value of
£145 13s.
Walter Bidgood
died 5 October 1891 at 68 High Street, Bluetown, Sheerness, aged 64years.
The family of Walter and Elizabeth Bidgood:

2:1:2:8 Walter Thomas Bidgood, b. 1870, Sheerness
2:1:2:1 At 1871 census Susanna Bidgood
was
unmarried, 17 years, and living with her family at the "Horse and
Groom" at Bluetown, Sheerness where her father Walter was Innkeeper..
Family stories tell of Susanna running away and joining the
circus but this is unsubstantiated.
However it is interesting that at Susanna’s marriage to William Henry McDowell
in 1875 she living was at Gillingham rather than her home town of Sheerness. They married at the Parish Church,
Gillingham on 19 August 1875, were both of 'full age' and unmarried. William's occupation was Dealer; his father
Samuel McDowell, a Sawyer and Susanna's father, Walter Bidgood, a Licensed
Victualler. The witnesses: Edward and
Emma Bernthal and the vicar: Fred Fitzgerald.
By 1881 William (Marine Store Dealer) and Susanna were living at
23/25 Charles Street,
Bluetown, Sheerness with their 2 baby daughters Florence Mary (1) and Henrietta
(5 months). Susanna's parents were living at
68/69 High Street, Bluetown.
William McDowell died
in 1895 only 16 days after their only son had died of Scarlet Fever aged 3 years. He was aged 49 years and the cause of death was Erysipilas.
At 1901 census Susanna, a widow now for six
years, was listed as General dealer.
Daughters Henrietta (20), Alice (18) and Hilda (12) were still at
home.
It
seems Susanna ran a small
delicatessen/sweet shop at Bluetown to support her family.
Susanna died at her daughter Florence's home, Ashford, Kent
in 1937 aged 83 years.

Bidgood appears in 1881 census as a Stoker on the Royal Naval vessel
CONTEST. It is believed that he drowned
in 1893. His niece Fredda May Bidgood who
was born that year was named in his memory.
2:1:2:5 Albert A. F. S.
Bidgood, Naval Contractor, 27, married Lizzie Kennett, 24, of Lyminge,
Folkestone on 17 October 1892. By 1894,
and the birth of his son, Albert was a Licensed Victualler at 27 High Street, Bluetown. In 1901 Albert, still a Licensed Victualler,
and family were at Dover.
2:1:2:6 William Henry
Bidgood was 16 years and a Cowman at census in 1881. He married Sarah Heigho of
Sheerness in 1890. At 1891 census William and Sarah and their baby daughter
Elizabeth were living with William’s widowed father, Walter Bidgood. Walter at this time was a greengrocer and
William his assistant. By 1901 William
was a Burner Coalman and had 4 children.
William and Sarah produced 13 children, although 3 died in childhood.
William Henry
Bidgood (20 Charles Street)
died 17 February 1914 aged 52. There was
an inquest into his death. It appears
that he had eaten pickled onions during the day following the extraction of
some teeth. He died during the night - "Syncopal attack following
overloading stomach with unmasticated pickled onions" was the cause of
death. William was buried at Halfway Cemetery, 24 February 1917.
First
son of William Bidgood, Walter
Frederick William Bidgood was killed in the explosion of HMS Princess Irene on
27 May 1915 at Sheerness.
HMS Princess Irene a mine layer had 225 officers and men plus
80 petty officers from Chatham
and 76 dockyard workers on board when the catastrophic internal explosion
occurred. There was only one survivor
and remains were scattered for miles.
This disaster occurred only 6 months after a similar catastrophe at
Sheerness when HMS Bulwark exploded with 700 people on board on 26 November
1914.
2:1:2:8 Walter Thomas Bidgood was a
greengrocer assistant with his father in 1891 and was listed in 1901 as
licensed victualler, not married, living at 5 Sheppey Street, Sheerness. He married Rosa Annie Spain at Gravesend in 1910.
