Malcolm Carmichael  died 20 April 1888 at 33 Quarry Road, Oban aged 49 years.  His son, John Carmichael, was Informant and was reportly present at his death, however and unusually,  there was no cause of death or certifying medical attendant  recorded.  His widow, Mary and family were still at Oban in 1891 but at 1901 census the family were at 146 W Graham Street, Barony, Glasgow.  Mary appears to have died in Glasgow in 1906.

2:5:2 Mary Carmichael was unmarried, 60y. and living with her widowed mother and unmarried brother Angus in 1901.  In 1871 census she was recorded as a  female teacher.  She and her sister Susan were in later years living at 270 Great Western Road, Glasgow.  Mary died in 1923 and was buried in Tarbert.

2:5:3 Angus Carmichael was a fisherman and also never married. He, along with brothers Hugh and Daniel held the feu contract to Colin G. P. Campbell Esq. of Stonefield (the laird) for Castle Cottage but in later years appear to have purchased the cottage.  Angus died in 1910 aged 72 years.

2:5:4 Hugh Carmichael did not marry and was a fisherman.  He died 15 June , 1910 aged 88.

2:5:5 Sarah Carmichael  was living in Glasgow in 1861.  She was a live-in servant with John Masline McGregor, a hosiery warehouseman and his 2 sisters at 97 Eglinton Street, in the parish of Govan.

Her first marriage was to John Havelock Southwell on 12 August 1864 at 203 Stobcross Street, Glasgow.  Sarah was described as a Domestic Servant, 22 years and John as a Joiner (Journeyman), 27 years.  ( I found no records of John Southwell's death 1864 - 1871 when Sarah married Robert Penney.)  In 1871 census Sarah was a servant at  4 Moss Rd., Moss side, Crossmyloof and “unmarried”.

It appears the couple had a daughter Alice Ada Carmichael Southwell born about 1865 probably in Glasgow.  At 1871 census Alice Carmichael,  aged 6 years and described as a relative, was living with her grandparents Angus and Susan Carmichael at Tarbert.  In 1881 Alice Carmichael, aged 16 years, was boarding at 91 Shields Road, Glasgow with Mary Carmichael, wife of Duncan McKeith Carmichael.  Alice's uncle John Dawson Carmichael was also boarding there and visiting was her aunt, Susan Carmichael.  In 1889 Alice Ada C. Southwell married  Donald Williamson at Blytheswood, Glasgow.  Donald, a shipping  clerk, and Alice raised their family in Inverness.  Alice died of pleurisy at Telford Terrace, Inverness in 1897 aged 33 years.   Her death was certified by her uncle Dr Daniel Carmichael.  At 1901 census widower, Donald Williamson and his 4 children were at Redfern Cottage,  Inverness along with "aunt" Susan Carmichael, housekeeper, "uncle" Daniel Carmichael, General Practitioner, widower, and "cousin" Edith Carmichael.

Sarah Carmichael  married Robert Penney on 13 Nov 1871 at Crossmyloof, Parish of Cathcart, County of Renfrew.  Robert was listed as Baker (Journeyman), 28y, Bachelor; Sarah as a Domestic Servant, 30y, Widow.  The usual residence of both was Crossmyloof, Cathcart.   The marriage was witnessed by Thomas McGregor and Mary Irving.

In 1881 Robert, Sarah and their first 4 children were living at Campbell's Land Front, Pollokshaws Road, Strathbungo.  Their 3rd child, Susan MacKeith (sic) Penney, was born at Bellfield Lane, Portobello, Edinburgh in 1876, so perhaps the family spent a short time in Edinburgh around this time.   In 1879, at the death of their 8 month old daughter, Mary Carmichael Penney, they were at Campbell's Back Land, Strathbungo.  At this time Robert's occupation was given as Cook (Merchant Service).  Sarah at Mary's death still filled her name out as Sarah Penney, previously Southwell, M.S. Carmichael.

By 1891 the family, which now included 7 children, was at 31 Govanhill Street, Govan and in 1901 the family was found at 9 Garturk Street, Govan.  On the night of 1901 census (early April), Robert Penney was not listed with the family at 9 Garturk Street and Sarah was "Head of the family".  Robert Penney died at
6 May 1901 at Victoria Infirmary aged 57 years.  Cause of death: Fracture of the base of skull. Encephalitis from laceration.  His widow, Sarah Penney was informant.

Sarah emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1909 with her eldest son Robert and youngest daughter Sarah.  At 1911 census of Toronto East they were living at 546 Jones Avenue.  Also living there were Sarah's daughter Helen Forrest and her 3 children and Sarah's son, Archibald Penney who had all arrived in 1910.  Sarah died 3 May 1911 at 546 Jones Avenue, Toronto of septicaemia.  She was aged 68 years.

TARBERT, LOCH FYNE

Tarbert (Lochfyne) village is situated on the isthmus between Kintyre peninsula and South Knapdale.  Its harbour, East Loch Tarbert, is an arm of  Loch Fyne about one mile in length and three furlongs wide with an island in the centre.  Tarbert was the centre of Loch Fyne herring fishery and an important centre for trade and  communications.
The appearance of the village is very pleasing.  You have arrived, we shall say, some fine day by the good ship "Columba", which calls at the outer pier, constructed at a distance of rather less than a mile from the centre of the village by the present laird in the year 1866.  Choosing either to drive or walk, you pass on your left hand a very handsome and commodious hotel, recently erected.  Beyond it, and lining the road as it skirts the water, are about half-a-dozen tastefully built villas, which have sprung up in the last four or five years.  Now you come in sight of the hoary ruin, the old guardian of the village, which looks down from its craggy height, unmoved, on the changes which time has wrought around.  Under its shadow a second group of neat cottages with their gardens has been erected, and proceeding a little further a turn in the road brings you in sight of the greater portion of the village, snugly nestling under the shelter of its hills.
From " Tarbert Past and Present"   Dugald Mitchell (1886)
